UPDATE: I just received word that the sign up period has been extended through 2010. But I would try again NOW, in case they change their minds again, lol

Nielsen Homescan – last chance to sign up for freebies for scanning your groceries? Wow, I just received word that the sign up link we have for the Nielsen Homescanner program will be good through 12/31/09 only. I am not sure if or when that sign up link will return. So if you have not tried signing up yet, NOW IS THE TIME! If you tried signing up before, but were turned down, give it one last try before this sign up link is gone for good! Don’t miss out on your chance to get freebies for scanning your groceries!

I’ve been in the Nielsen Homescan program for several months now! It’s great to know I am making a difference and getting free stuff for the grocery shopping we do anyway! I encourage everyone to see if they are accepting new people in your area. It’s free to sign up and you get freebies just for scanning your household purchases!

You can see our Nielsen HomeScanner here:

Update: It appears the Nielsen sign up site is running slow at times (probably getting hammered with people trying to sign up!). If the above links are not working,

how do you know if you get rejected or not? I applied earlier but I have not received any scanners or follow up emails after this one. They said,

“Dear Potential Panel Member,

Thank you for your interest in joining the Nielsen Homescan Consumer Panel! We are processing your information and will contact you within the next few weeks to update you on your status.

What Homescan® Panelists Do
If selected to participate on this elite panel, you will be sent a small, handheld scanner (provided by Nielsen at no cost to you) to scan the UPC barcodes on all of your household’s purchases. Then, once a week, via the scanner, you’ll send your purchase information to us. That’s it!

What’s In It For You?
As a Homescan panelist, you’ll have the chance to be one of the lucky few that help manufacturers and retailers make decisions on what products to develop or improve and, ultimately, what to keep on or remove from store shelves. Your opinions will make a big difference in the consumer marketplace!

In addition, with each weekly transmission you will earn participation points toward fabulous, name-brand electronics, home appliances, tools, toys, jewelry, and more. As members, all panelists have the opportunity to win cash and other terrific prizes!

Thank you for your interest in the Homescan Consumer Panel. Your opinions will make a difference in our consumer marketplace!”

if you received that email, you are on the waiting list and should eventually get a scanner. It can take several weeks or even a couple months – as scanners are returned, they send them out to people on the waiting list. So basically you are waiting on someone to return their scanner before you get yours. Congrats on being accepted!!!

I have been on that waiting list for 3+ months.

yes, it all depends on when scanners are returned as to when you will get off the waiting list. Some people may only be on it a week, but it may be months for some. The average time seems to be 4 – 8 weeks based on what our readers have told me.

Okey. I will be patiently waiting ^^. Thx

I have been on the waiting list since this summer. Maybe eventually I will get a scanner. Patiently waiting until then.

Can you explain a little more what the rewards are?
If you scan once a week and do the surveys they send you…how long does it take to earn anything…

…maybe a comparison to Swagbucks $5 Amazon gift card…45 swagbucks..
@2 a day that’s 27 days… 1 a day would be 45 days…

how long to get something equivalent… roughly speaking…

thanks, I am off the waiting list and awaiting my scanner…

Cheryl – the prizes vary, as they are always adding new prizes and sometimes they take away prizes when there are no more left. There are no Amazon gift cards or Paypal prizes like Swagbucks. After about 2 months we had enough for a prize at the lowest level which was around 6,000 points I think. The lower prizes are things like toys, kitchen items, etc. Some of the higher prizes are electronics like TV’s or gaming systems – how long it takes you to earn those will depend on how often you scan, how many surveys you take, and how many special Nielsen panels you are invited to within Nielsen. (I have been invited to 1 special panel so far and the points are adding up quickly that way.) Also, the longer you are a member, the more points you earn for scanning. So people who have been doing the program for a couple years are earning a lot more points that I am for example. Also, if you get your scanner and decide the program is not for you, you can send it back free of charge. Congrats on getting on the waiting list!
