We have a GE fridge with an icemaker and last year I noticed that the ice was tasting funny. I talked to our local GE appliance store to get an idea of what was up since it has a filter that I change regularly, it should be good ice.
To elaborate, unlike most appliance stores, our local rural appliance store here is just awesome, great sales, above and beyond installation and deliver. The best part is not only do they have awesome service in the repair side, you can go ask them questions and instead of charging you a service call to come out, they usually tell you how to fix it for free. LOL.
Anyway, they mentioned a common problem in fridges is that the odors from the items in the freezer and even in the fridge (read: smelly onions) can make the ice in the icemaker taste foul.
His remedy was to take a used dryer sheet and put it in the bottom drawer of the fridge and a used dryer sheet and put it in the bottom of the freezer. Then dump the ice in the basket and let it make new ice. The sheets will keep the ice from absorbing the odors and turning it into nasty flavored ice.
WORKED LIKE A CHARM ! ! !
