Homemade Vapor Rub
Cold and flu season is no fun but you can alleviate some of the symptoms like congestion and stuffy nose with a simple rub. The old blue bottle with the green label is what my mom used, and it worked, oh how it worked so well. As soon as you began to smell the familiar scent it went to work. However as a mom now I recognize how bad some of the chemicals in it can be for my kids so as always I turn to my essential oils. Safe, effective, and pleasing scents make a powerhouse for cleaning, beauty products, or even relief from illness. Check out this homemade Vapor Rub or Homemade “Vicks” recipe!
Ingredients for Homemade Vapor Rub:
2o drops Eucalyptus essential oil
15 drops Peppermint essential oil
10 drops Lavender essential oil
5 drops Tea Tree/ Melaleuca
1 oz. beeswax
1/4 cup coconut oil
Directions:
Place coconut oil and beeswax in a small saucepan over medium heat. Â If you enjoy making your own beauty products at home it is a good idea to invest in a small saucepan just for this use.
Heat until melted stirring frequently.
Remove from heat for 5 minutes to cool, then whisk in essential oils well.
Pour into a glass jar- a 4 oz. mason jar works well.
Allow to set and firm up, it should be pretty close to the same texture as the store bought version. Â Vapor rub will keep for up to 12 months at a moderate room temperature.
To use rub on chest, back, or bottoms of feet- then cover with socks for relief from colds and flu. While this is generally safe for children some children have a reaction and respiratory issues from Eucalyptus. You can use more peppermint in place of the eucalyptus if you like.
