With the price of produce lately, I am working on getting things together to make a raised bed garden in our side yard for the usual veggies. Nowadays it is costing me more for an apple than for a chocolate bar. Since I am trying to eat healthy, this is hard since fruit and veggies are getting so expensive. Since it is going to get worse, I figure it will be another hobby for me to play with this summer anyway. I never had much of a green thumb, so hopefully everything won’t die 3 weeks into it.
I used to loathe tomatoes, but here lately I have actually taken a liking to them and eat them regularly. I decided that for the cost of these I should plant my own. Wanting a good crop, I have ordered some of those upside down planters like my dad uses. He always has huge crops of tomatoes using them, way better than in the ground with less spoilage. So I had to shell out 19 bucks for a two pack but hopefully after a few weeks of tomatoe growing I can make that back in savings.
If anyone is interested, they are called topsy turvy or something like that, pretty cool. I would have been suspicious, but my dad has used them for years with great luck.
I figure for my garden I will plant:
Tomatoes in hanging deals
Carrots
Green Beans
Cucumbers
Squash
Any other thoughts, I am not much of a fruit fan other than bananas and apples. The sad part is we used to have a good apple tree, but I cut it down when we moved in so I could put up a carport. *sigh*

I grow my own, but really it does n’t save money… You have to enjoy doing it and have a passion for it.. then of course enjoy eating what you’ve grown…

We grow our own also and we really do save money. We eat fresh vegetables through summer then I can and freeze all along also. It is a big savings for the fall and winter months when we use our preserved food from our garden. Good luck I think you will be glad you had a garden.
