Homemade Mens Shaving Cream

If you have not yet tried making your own men’s shaving cream, you should try it at least once. Nothing out of a can feels as nice or smells as nice as this Homemade Mens Shaving Cream. The simple ingredients and your choice of scents makes this shaving cream recipe a great gift for the guy who has everything. Create a texture and scent combination that he will love and package it up in a small mason jar, add a “manly” ribbon for a nice touch and perhaps even a handmade tag to label your gift and it’s ready to go as a gift, or start lathering on right away to remove unwanted facial hair!

If this is your first time dabbling with essential oils and you want a good starter kit, then this set has a variety of scents that can be used in many ways!

Plus, we will be bringing you a lot of homemade beauty and gift ideas, as this post is part of our 12 Days of Handmade Christmas Gifts series!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup coconut oil

1/2 cup shea butter

1/4 cup almond oil

2 vitamin e capsules or 2 tsp. of oil

1 1/2 Tbsp. baking soda

10-15 drops essential oil of choice

Some delicious scents for him are:

Sandalwood

Peppermint and Rosemary

Eucalyptus

Bay Rum

Wild Orange and Clove

Directions:

Place Shea butter and coconut oil in a microwave safe dish or pot if you don’t want to use microwave and heat until melted.

Stir in almond oil and essential oils.

Place in refrigerator until mixture is almost solid.

Remove from refrigerator, add baking soda and then whip in a hand or stand mixer until light and fluffy.

Transfer to a small airtight container and put the lid on.

This homemade shaving cream recipe can be adapted for women’s shaving cream too. Just choose your favorite essential oil! Lavender or tea tree oil are favorites of some folks. Prefer unscented? Just skip the essential oils and use the first 5 ingredients only! Put a tiny bit in a non-breakable bowl if you want, as you are using it.

You can use this diy shaving cream in the shower and use some homemade lotion bars or moisturizers afterwards to help keep your skin soft. Great for sensitive skin too!

I really like the idea of making my own shaving cream. Ilove that it saves money & would be seemingly healthier. I’ll have to put this on my list of things to try to make!. Ty

Can I use olive oil instead od almond oil? What about glycerin?

How much does 1 batch make?

I live in the South… any idea if this melts during the summer? I know hubby would never go all the way downstairs to fetch it out of the fridge 🙂

Candice – the shave cream can be left out of fridge – it will just be softer and a bit runny if it is warm in the house

Stephanie – yes, you could use olive oil instead. You can add glycerin and it will lather a bit more…. however, don’t use it INSTEAD OF… as that is taking away the key moisturizer

This is a great gift! How much does one batch make?

Is this enough to make a really small mason jar’s worth? Also, when you say you can use 2 tsp. of oil in place of the Vitamin E, do you mean any kind of oil? Or specifically vitamin E oil?

    Amy – vitamin E oil

This recipe will not quite fill a pint jar’s worth

I was so excited to try this recipe for shave cream but became very disappointed when, only a few hours after I had made it, it became as a liquid again. What did I do wrong. I measured everything right, I whipped it until I thought it was light and fluffy but then, I never could do marange well either. Could you give me some suggestions to try.
    Thanks,
    Robin

Not sure why it would be doing that. The one we made (shown in this blog post) is soft, but not a liquid. We do suggest keeping it in the fridge until you’re ready to use it, as that will also keep it firmer.

How much glycerin would you add? Would you add it with the other oils?

  15. Jaime Prideaux says

    December 16, 2014 at 1:58 pm

Tanna – You can add just a tiny bit of glycerin…. however, don’t use it INSTEAD OF any of the oils, but in addition to… if you remove an oil, that is taking away the key moisturizer

Does this have to be kept in the fridge?

  17. Jaime Prideaux says

It may become runny if not kept in the fridge. I would store it in the fridge and take it out when you are ready to use

How long does it take for the mixture to become “almost solid?”

anything with coconut oil as a base will melt over 75 degrees F. It doesn’t change how it works or anything, but if you don’t like it melting simply store it in a cool place(:

I am just wondering how long it will last for when made and stored. Thinking about making some for Christmas gifts for next year.
